The Oncoming Storm

Ohhh, hello everyone out there! It's good to see you all again! Welllll, don't really see all of you, some of you I just hear.

Come on now, say hi, don't be shy. Especially anyone from home. Of course, you might not know if you're from my home since essentially the vast majority of the people in my home, past, present, and future don't know I exist.

But, I'm the Doctor so if you know me say hi!

So, let me ask you all a question. This is a good place for asking questions, isn't it? Big, big, 'why are were here?' questions or little 'what's the best way to...?' type questions. Sort of like a wikipedia that you have to wait on answers for. Love wikipedia, brilliant idea, all those people coming together and sharing knowledge. Get lost forever on that thing. My favorite page is the one about archaeoacoustics (yes, it's possible) and infinite monkey theorem (not true, by the way). That last one is just fun to say.

Who are you? I mean, who are you really? What is it that defines you? I'm not talking about your name or your race (unless you're like me and you're name and race define you) but how do you see yourself?

Ohhhh, look at this, the City! And just like I left it. Wellll, not just like I left it, but mostly like I left it.

Dreams are weird things. Are they just your brain sorting and trying to make sense of the day's information during REM sleep or something more? The scientific explanation is sort of boring and unimaginative. People seem to dream about things that frighten them or wish they could have.

A lot of psychiatrist say that dreams reveal hidden desires or needs. Did anybody learn anything about themselves from the last curse that they didn't know before? Obviously we all learned things about other people but that's sort of personal.

CUTLERS GRAMMAR SCHOOL HISTORY STUDENTS!!!!

Have an absolute brilliant day today. You're all fantastic students and you'll do amazing on your finals. Wellll, most of you will do amazing. Alright, some of you will.

Remember, if you have an A in my class, you didn't have to take the final. Also, if you participated in the reenactment battle last week witht he proper amount of hours, you didn't have to take the final. For all the rest of you, the open book, open note, take home final that I gave you last week is due today by 5 PM.

Also, there's a lot of girls that seem to not have dates for the dance yet. That's very sad, I hope that all of you are making the most of this opportunity.

Ohhhh, I love me a good revolution against an oppressive regime. Seen a lot of revolutions. Some good, some bad, but all of them very, very inspiring. Wellll, except for the Custard Guild Revolution of Betelgeuse, but that hardly counts.

Of course, lots of things to consider in a place like this. Even if you overthrow the deities, what if you can't get back home? Anyone ever wonder where all the food comes from? All sorts of beef and chicken but no farms around here. All sorts of electricity and water and plumbing in general but no public works companies. What happens if you're successful and that all stops? What if you're trapped here without any of that? Just what are you willing to sacrifice to be free?

Ohhhh, that last curse was... wellll it was interesting to be like that. Still very clever, just in a different way. Could have done without all the murders though.

And Romana, where did you go? Rose and I got there but you were gone and you never came home. And-

Very weird set of curses for the month, don’t you think? People falling in love, using horrible pick up lines… well, mostly horrible pick up lines, some were rather brilliant, people reliving moments… all very interesting.

On my home planet we obviously didn’t have Valentine’s Day, since we never had a Saint Valentine. Welll, never had a saint anything, really…

But I love the idea of a holiday devoted to love. Suuuure you can argue that it’s all about the card, flower, and chocolate companies but the idea of a day devoted to love is just brilliant.

Love is so amazing. It’s like nothing else. It can make you act crazy or rational or any number of ways. Ohhhh, but most of all it makes you feel alive. Love of the unknown, love of discovery, love of being right, love of someone else, they all make you feel like your existence is validated. Even if you don’t have anyone to buy chocolates or flowers or whatever for, just make sure you take a day to celebrate what you love.

Ohhhh, drank a bit too much eggnog last night. Is it Christmas already? Ohhh, looks like it's Christmas already and then some.

And I'm still in the City?

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear. Didn't expect to still be here, really. Thought I'd be heading out for.. wellll... something. Didn't even get anyone any presents. Haven't had to get anyone presents for years now, always some sort of invasion or something or leaving the City.

Ohhhh, everything looks so brilliant. The ballroom is all lit up and the band is ready. And the food is absolutely fantastic!

Wellll, at least no more than we had before this all started.

Always feels good when you can say that. Not a lot of things in the world you can say that bring relief like, "No more zombies."

Sorry to any of you that got imprisoned in the TARDIS. Only not really sorry, since it was necessary. It was an interesting way to make new friends though. Hello Anita and Holly!

Ohhh, zombies are never pleasant. Not only do they smell and look awful, but they used to be your friends and your family. It's demoralizing, a psychological warfare almost as much as a physical one.

If anyone is looking for refuge, you can come to the TARDIS. It's the blue police box northeast of the center of the City. It's much bigger on the inside and nothing gets in that I don't want in. Wellll, that's not let in from the inside, really. But I don't think anyone will let a zombie in.

If you're infected and want to be kept safe from others, we've got a place for you too. Not quite as ritzy as the rest, but you'll be safe from yourself and others.

Martha, Jack, Reinette, how are you all doing?

And did you see, Rose is back!

Ohh, the changing weather and the holiday season are in full swing. I absolutely love it. Love Christmas, brilliant holiday. Well, sometimes, when aliens are attacking Earth or something like that. Always seem to like to attack it on Christmas, not sure why.

You know what the City needs though?

That's right! Formal wear, live music, catered food, holiday atmosphere. Reinette and I will be hosting one in the TARDIS and you're all invited. Wellll, not everyone in the City, not quite big enough for that, but if you can see this you're invited. It's on December 22nd, starting at 8:00 pm.

Brilliant place this, isn't it? Highly recommend you ride the carousel, nothing quite like it really. Welll, riding another carousel is somewhat like it. Wellll, pretty much any carousel is like another. Still, highly recommend it.

So many people getting sick, lately. Very strange. Of course, what's more strange is that more people haven't been getting sick before this. All sorts of different realities and dimensions and different types of illness... almost everyone should be dead by now, really. So. Why is it happening now?

Jack, I had a brilliant time the other day! All sorts of dashing about, it felt like old times. Well, it felt like current times. Well, old times feel a lot like current times, really.

You know what's fascinating? Well, of course you all know something that's fascinating, you live in the City. Bad question to start out with. It's fascinating that nearly every culture on every planet in every dimension has some sort of myth or legend about life after death.

A lot of very smart people with a lot of letters after their name have speculated that this is because people want to believe that there's something more after life, that what we all do in life matters after our biological functions just stop. Depending on where your culture is in its evolution those smart people might tell you that's all just a myth, that once our biological functions stop then that's it. Sometimes they might be willing to admit that maybe some sort of energy imprint gets left behind as a ghost or a spirit.

But I think this place, more than anywhere, shows us that you don't cease to exist just because electrical impulses in your brain stop firing. Ohhhh, sure, that may signal the end of life in biological terms but is it really the end of everything? Because that would be sad, because there's so much to see and so much to do that even if you had 10 lifetimes you couldn't see them all. There's too many wonderful, amazing, fascinating, puzzling things in the world for them all to be explained away by what we know in this life.

So while you're out dressing in costume (ohhh, I love the costumes, such a brilliant idea, getting to dress up and be someone else for the night) and asking for candy take a moment to remember how beautiful life is and that when you pass on it's just the start of something new.

Oh, and who wants to go ride some horses and go for a picnic before it gets too cold? Reinette, Donna, Rani, Me, Rose, Dr. Noble, Sarah, anyone at all? I love riding horses, I had an amazing horse once, Arthur. Rose wouldn't let me keep it though. Rode it through a mirror into the past to rescue a damsel in distress. Rather brilliant, I was.
